Standard BIS Certification (ISI Mark)
Mandatory ISI Mark certification for domestic manufacturers under Scheme-I. Required for products like cement, steel, electrical appliances, and chemicals.
Overview
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issues the ISI mark under Scheme-I, which guarantees that a product meets the Indian Standard (IS). For hundreds of products (notified under Quality Control Orders or QCOs), it is a criminal offense to manufacture, store, or sell them in India without a valid BIS license. The process requires the manufacturer to possess specific in-house testing equipment, deploy qualified Quality Control personnel, and undergo a rigorous physical factory audit by a BIS officer before the license is granted.

Step-by-Step BIS Timeline
Our step-by-step advisory workflow.
Step 1: Gap Analysis & Setup
We audit your factory to ensure you have the exact machinery and testing equipment required by the specific Indian Standard (IS).
Step 2: Application Submission
We compile the technical dossier and submit the application to the jurisdictional BIS branch office.
Step 3: Factory Audit & Sampling
A BIS officer visits the factory, audits the production and QC processes, and draws a sample which is sent to an independent BIS lab.
Step 4: License Grant
If the independent lab report passes, BIS grants the license, allowing you to emboss the ISI mark on your products.
Key Advantages of the ISI Mark
The ISI mark is synonymous with trust and is legally mandated for survival in many industries.
Legal Compliance
For products under mandatory QCOs, operating without BIS leads to factory sealing, massive fines, and imprisonment of the directors.
Consumer Trust
Indian consumers explicitly look for the ISI mark on electrical appliances and safety gear, viewing it as the ultimate seal of safety.
Government Tenders
You cannot participate in any government procurement tenders (GeM portal) without a valid BIS license for your product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful answers to common regulatory inquiries.
Do I need in-house testing equipment? Can I just use an outside lab?▼
For Scheme-I (ISI Mark), having the prescribed in-house testing equipment and a qualified QC person on your payroll is absolutely mandatory. You cannot outsource routine daily testing.
Is BIS certification valid forever?▼
Initially, the license is granted for 1 or 2 years. It must be renewed periodically by submitting production returns and paying the marking fee based on your production volume.
