BIS CRS Certification for Power Banks
Mandatory Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) for Power Banks. Secure your R-Number to legally manufacture or import IT and electronic goods in India.
Overview
Under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) governed by MeitY and BIS, specific electronic and IT goods—such as Power Banks, Laptops, Mobile Phones, and Smartwatches—cannot be sold or imported into India without BIS registration. Unlike the ISI mark (Scheme-I), CRS (Scheme-II) does not require a factory audit. Instead, it relies heavily on product testing at an Indian BIS-recognized laboratory. Upon passing the tests, the manufacturer is granted a unique R-Number, which must be printed on the product and packaging.

Step-by-Step CRS Timeline
Our step-by-step advisory workflow.
Step 1: Sample Testing
We submit the physical samples of the power bank to a BIS-recognized Indian laboratory for testing against IS 13252 standards.
Step 2: Test Report Generation
The lab conducts rigorous safety tests (thermal, electrical) and generates the Test Report. This report is valid only for 90 days.
Step 3: Portal Submission
We immediately file the application on the BIS CRS portal, attaching the test report and factory KYC documents.
Step 4: Grant of Registration
BIS scrutinizes the application and issues the Registration Certificate containing the unique R-Number.
Key Advantages of CRS Registration
CRS is the ultimate barrier to entry for electronics in India.
Legitimize Imports
Customs officials strictly check the CRS registration on the ICEGATE portal. Goods without an R-Number will be seized immediately.
Access E-Commerce
Amazon, Flipkart, and other major platforms mandate the BIS R-Number before allowing the listing of any power banks or electronics.
Faster Process
Since no factory audit is required, the CRS process is significantly faster than the traditional ISI mark process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful answers to common regulatory inquiries.
Do foreign manufacturers need an Indian representative?▼
Yes. If the manufacturer is located outside India, they must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) who takes legal responsibility for compliance.
Can the BIS lab test the cells and the power bank together?▼
No. The internal lithium-ion cells used in the power bank MUST be independently BIS registered (IS 16046) before the final power bank can be tested and registered.
