BIS Hallmark Registration for Jewelers
Mandatory registration for jewelers selling gold and silver artifacts. Ensure legal compliance and build immense trust with your retail customers.
Overview
The Government of India has made Hallmarking mandatory for Gold Jewelry and Artefacts. Any retail jeweler who wishes to sell gold or silver jewelry must obtain a Certificate of Registration from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Once registered, the jeweler must send their jewelry to a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Center (AHC), which tests the purity and laser-engraves the Hallmark (comprising the BIS logo, purity grade, and a 6-digit HUID code) before the jewelry can be sold to a customer.

Key Advantages of Hallmark Registration
Registration is a legal mandate and a powerful marketing tool.
Legal Compliance
Selling un-hallmarked gold jewelry in mandatory districts attracts severe penalties, including fines based on the value of the jewelry and possible imprisonment.
Customer Trust
Consumers refuse to buy gold without the HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code. Registration proves your absolute transparency regarding gold purity.
Lifetime Validity
Unlike other BIS licenses, the Jeweler Registration for Hallmarking is granted for a lifetime and does not require annual renewals (subject to regulatory changes).
Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful answers to common regulatory inquiries.
Can I hallmark the jewelry in my own shop?▼
No. The registration only allows you to sell hallmarked jewelry. To actually test and engrave the hallmark, you must send the jewelry to an independent, BIS-certified Assaying and Hallmarking Center (AHC).
Are small jewelers exempt from mandatory hallmarking?▼
Currently, the government has provided exemptions for jewelers with an annual turnover of less than Rs. 40 Lakhs. However, voluntary registration is highly recommended to build customer trust.
