TAN Registration (Tax Deduction Account Number)
Obtain your 10-digit alphanumeric TAN to legally deduct TDS from salaries, rent, and vendor payments. Mandatory for all corporate entities.
Overview
The Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department. Under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, it is mandatory for every person/business who is liable to deduct Tax at Source (TDS) or collect Tax at Source (TCS) to obtain a TAN. Without a TAN, you cannot deposit the deducted tax into the government treasury, nor can you file the quarterly TDS returns. It is required for companies, LLPs, NGOs, and large proprietorships.

Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful answers to common regulatory inquiries.
Do I need a separate TAN for TCS and TDS?▼
No. A single TAN serves both purposes. You can use the same 10-digit number to deposit Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) as well as Tax Collected at Source (TCS).
Do individuals/proprietors need a TAN?▼
Individuals and HUFs are required to obtain a TAN only if their accounts are subject to a tax audit (turnover > Rs. 1 Crore in business). However, for purchasing property (TDS u/s 194-IA) or paying massive rent (TDS u/s 194-IB), individuals can use their PAN instead of getting a TAN.
Can I have multiple TANs?▼
It is illegal to hold more than one TAN for the same entity name. However, a company can have separate TANs for its different branches/divisions.
